Introduction To The Classical Indian Dance Form Bharata Natyam

Theme of Course

Experience Vedic Dance to nourish your body and mind, enliven consciousness, and enjoy greater balance and wellbeing. In this course you will learn fundamentals of Bharata Natyam, South Indian dance, one of the main forms of Indian Classical dance. With easy to follow, step-by-step instruction, this course is designed to guide anyone to learn and practice Vedic Dance and enjoy its benefits.

In this course, you will

• Learn and practice adavus, rhythmic, geometric patterns of movement which are the basic units of pure, abstract dance
• Learn and practice a short expressive, storytelling dance choreographed to a verse from the Vedic Literature
• Practice hasta mudras, hand gestures, which have a healing, balancing influence on the physiology and are part of every dance movement
• Explore the connections of dance with Maharishi Vedic Science, the Science of Consciousness, and enjoy tapes of Maharishi on dance therapy, art and music, and yoga

Audience

Open to all those who practices the Transcendental Meditation technique. Open to all those who practices the Transcendental Meditation technique. Beginners are welcome, no previous dance training is necessary. This course is an online, condensed version of the in-residence course that has been offered at MERU and in centers around the world.

Technical requirements to join are that you have a desktop, laptop, or mobile device that can access the internet. The live practice sessions will be conducted via Zoom video conferencing software. Instructions for using Zoom, and login details for joining the course, will be provided before the course.

In order to encourage interaction, live zoom sessions are not recorded. Course participants will have access to pre-recorded instructional videos on the Vedic Dance Academy online platform for three months, MayJuly. If you miss a live session you can make up the material online. After the course you can access the videos to support your continued practice. Videos of Maharishi are only played live on Zoom, so everyone is encouraged to attend live.
